Aluminium Specifications Not only does aluminium’s versatility make it the second most commonly used metal after steel, but the metal comprises 8% of the earth’s crust, making it the third most common element, as well as the world’s most abundant metal. The element is derived from the mineral bauxite, which is converted to aluminium oxide via the Bayer process. This is then converted to the metal using the Hall-Heroult Process and electrolytic cells. Pure aluminium has a high electrical conductivity, is resistant to corrosion, ductile, and soft. As a result, aluminium sits among the lightest engineering materials with a weight-to-strength ratio that is better than steel. Thanks to its formability, recyclability, corrosion resistance, lightness, and strength, aluminium can be applied in all manner of ways.
